68% of Kiwis believe the government should regulate banks to ensure they offer fraud and cybercrime protections to their customers. 

Currently, there are no guaranteed protections for customers who have suffered from fraud to have their money reimbursed. It is likely why only 25% of Kiwis say that banks should be trusted to self-regulate and deal with fraud and cybercrime.

New Zealanders have likely seen the benefits of the Consumer Guarantees Act and want similar protections against the increasing amount of fraud and cybercrime affecting everyday Kiwis. 

According to Horizon Research, 27% of New Zealand adults have experienced fraud or bank theft in the last 12 months.

• 12% have had someone use a bank card, credit card, cheque or other document, without permission, to commit fraud and/or steal from them
• 9% have experienced fraud, or theft involving a bank account
• 6% have been a victim of cybercrime, with an internet device accessed without permission.
  After fraud takes place, it can be difficult to prove the necessary steps to have that money reimbursed!
